Our Goats |
MEET SOME OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR FARM COMMUNITY |
As with many rural areas, keeping livestock in our beautiful northeast Georgia community requires the use of guard animals. We have never lost an animal to a predator when they are on the prowl! There is no way to put a value on the dedicated service of these friends, who brave all kinds of weather conditions along with the herds that they are pledged to protect. |
This is JESSIE, a pure-breed Great Pyrenees. Originally, the Great Pyrenees roamed the mountains of Asia thousands of years ago, and eventually accompanied the nomadic tribesman and their flocks on their migration westward. By the 18th Century, the Great Pyrenees became the favorite breed for guarding the large estates in France. We are honored to have a representative of this majestic breed as one of our sentinels. |
To help guard our growing Angora goat herd, we have also employed the services of a wonderful mixed breed puppy named PATCHES, whose father is pure Meremma and whose mother is ¾ Great Pyrenees and ¼ Sarplaninac. All three of the breeds in this mix are well known for their attributes as exceptional guard dogs. If you are interested in obtaining a puppy from this mix, you can contact Sandy Melton of Nowhere Branch in Marshall, N.C. at http://nowherebranch.tripod.com/index.html |
And, finally, there are our two horses, DAISY and STORMY. They have both been with us for twenty years or more. Like the goats, they love Chaffhaye , which serves as both feed and hay. |
